Do you currently still own the item(s) you’re reviewing?
Did the maker meet your deadline?
No deadline was set as she does not work with deadlines. It took a little longer than the initial estimate/expectation but this was due to a backlog she’d encountered due to some former personal issues. By the time she redid her planning for 2017 she gave me an estimated starting date which she stuck to reasonably well.
Did you tell the maker about any issues you had?
How many hours have you worn/used the item(s) you’re reviewing?
Give your best estimate.
Somewhere around 20 hours
Initially the head was too loose and I had to use a pair of socks to help keep it in place during my first convention. She was supposed to have included some foam inserts to help with this but forgot to put them inside the package before she shipped it out. After a bit of discussion regarding where best to put them I ended up resolving this myself by cutting out my own inserts out of some blocks of soft packing foam I had lying around to save her on the shipping and be sure they were the right size. Worth mentioning here however is that. to my understanding. I do have a little bit of an oddly shaped head and that I’ve previously had issues finding good comfortable headphones due to it.
Ventilation seems just fine, I found that breathing in through my nose and out through my mouth seems to be the most optimal as the mouth of the head lines up well with my own mouth.
Vision is about average; I can see just fine in front of me though there is a decent blind spot in the center of my vision and peripheral vision is quite limited. With a little bit of effort I can see a little bit through the mouth though it’s not very comfortable for my eyes and I have to go almost completely cross-eyed to really see anything. The vision is quite grainy also due to the mesh that’s to be expected.
Overall it looks great! The symmetry is maybe just the tiniest hair off but it’s hard to tell even looking at it close up and I personally think it just adds to the visual appeal. Shaving is great though there are a select few spots where the backing shows if you look at just the right angle. This was communicated beforehand already however and I was informed she was not a fan of how this particular fur shaves as it can be hard to keep it consistent. Aside from that the fur is great, it’s a wonderful color and it’s very pleasant to brush it. I’ve also been told that, should it bother me too much, she’ll be very much willing to re-fur the head for me.
The expression and overall appearance is great and works really well for the ‘cute’ look we were going for to capture his personality. The variation in expressions depending on angle is perhaps not the widest but they work well enough for the look he’s supposed to have!
Compared to the concept art it’s maybe not a 100% match (though that’s to be expected). It does however very much match the maker’s style and I am very much satisfied with the way it looks.
The fit is very good, it’s not too tight nor too loose. The craftsmanship is really good and the seams too seem to be very durable. I did experience a popped seam in one specific area, something which actually surprised the maker when I mentioned it. This was however a very easy fix and took me just a couple minutes to sew it back together. Most likely the cause here was either that the original stitching was slightly too close to the edge of the fabric or the thread must’ve managed to snap somehow. Either way I wouldn’t blame Faruku for this as the overall craftsmanship is superb otherwise.
The interior of the suit is rather plain with the seams and backing exposed. Despite this it looks very clean and it’s clear that she knows what she’s doing judging by the locations and overall looks of the seams. The filling for padding is removable through holes at the top of each of the pockets. The holes are tidily closed using snap-buttons to prevent any filling material from getting out unintentionally.
Airflow wise I guess there’s not too much to comment on; It feels about like how I’d expect it. The digitigrade padding does make the leg area rather hot but it’s nothing I’d consider out of the norm.
Really not much to say here; The character has a rather simple body design and the bodysuit matches it just about perfectly. There is also little to no shaving that I can tell. Symmetry is just about perfect and it appears Faruku actually just made half the body first and then inverted the pattern for the other side.
Thus far both the hands and feet are both great, I’ve not yet had any major issues with them.
The hands are a simple glove-type design and fit well. The feet are built on seemingly rather plain shoes. Not sure the exact type but they are comfortable to wear nevertheless.
The only issues seem to be that the hands do not fit well under the arms of the bodysuit and instead seems to rather want to slide right over them instead. Whilst it’s maybe not as seamless I do not consider it a major issue; It’s super easy when putting the suit on compared to some friends’ suits where it can be a bit of a hassle getting the arms to go over the paws without a friend to help you.
The only other issue I’ve had is that the feet are a bit loose around my ankles. Not enough that they would fall off by themselves nor does it make them uncomfortable but I’m not sure I’d trust them to be tight enough for more highly active things such as dancing. This should however be a very easy fix.
Honestly, there’s very little that could’ve gone wrong here I feel; Both the hands and feet are a single color with no markings. The shaving is good overall even if, on the feet, maybe a teeny bit rough/ladder-like at the very bottom which is a non-issue because realistically you won’t notice it anyway unless you actually looked at it close-up with the feet off the ground.
I believe the pawpads on the hands are made from a vinyl-type material. Nothing too fancy but they are nice and cute!
The tail is good, no issues wearing it aside from it seemingly having a slight tendency to want to twist in a rather specific way. This is only noticeable when standing still and thus not really something I’d worry about. I’ve rather just tried to be conscious of the positioning of the tail whilst sitting to avoid excessive squishing or distortion.
It attaches to the bodysuit through a zipper-system that honestly is an absolutely ingenious way of doing it. There’s also a belt loop that makes it possible to wear it standalone, say if I’d like to wear the suit as a partial.
The overall look, curve and everything looks great and it’s definitely a very well-made tail!
Unfortunately, the pattern does not match up entirely with the design of the character; It’s supposed to be a white stripe along the bottom that connects to an all-around white tip but Faruku seems to have misunderstood this as she made the stripe just fine but missed that the tip is supposed to be white all-around. Instead it’s basically the full stripe along the bottom and a 50/50 split of orange and white at the tip. By the time I caught this in the WIP photos the tail had already been more or less completed and she was worried she may not have enough fur to complete the fursuit if she remade the tail. Modifying the pattern on the already completed tail also was not ideal as she told me doing so this might mess up the symmetry and curve; Thus I decided it’s not big enough of an issue and told her to keep it the way it is.
How satisfied are you with how closely the suit matches the concept art?
If there was no concept art, please state N/A
Aside from the tail issue I have no gripes at all here! Compared to the concept artwork the looks are just as expected and I am very much satisfied with the outcome!
How satisfied are you with how well everything fits together and matches up?
Do you markings match up at the seams? Are the colors consistent?
How satisfied are you with how easy it was to initially contact the maker for a quote?
I didn’t actually get the slot through normal means but rather I won it through an auction. Thus I can’t really comment on this.
How satisfied are you with the response time from the maker?
How long did it take them to respond?
Response times have always been very reasonable, she always got back to me as soon as she had the chance.
How satisfied are you with how the deadline was met for completion of your project?
Were any deadlines missed or was it done early?
As mentioned before, no hard deadlines were set. The time estimations I was given however were reasonably accurate.
How satisfied are you with the overall quality of your project?
Very satisfied, Faruku did a wonderful job overall with my suit!
How satisfied are you with the overall customer service and professionalism of the maker?
Very satisfied. Whilst there were a few minor hiccups (mainly that with the tail), she always stayed completely professional and has been very open with keeping myself and other customers frequently updated through various means including both a Trello page and Telegram group.
It is however worth mentioning that she was maybe a little slower with with helping me deal with the head fit issue compared to when she was actively working on the suit; Whilst she’s been very quick and open to answering my questions and we had a good discussion regarding how to best pad it out to make it more snug she did take her time to try and figure out the foam inserts she’d promised to send me which is partially why I ended up working it out by myself. Though this was also at a point where she was fairly caught up with another suit she was working on so I won’t give too much criticism for this.
Describe your experience. What were the pros and cons of working with this maker? And any final comments?
Overall, my experience has been almost universally positive. Faruku is a very good maker and I’d happily recommend her to anyone that’s interested in getting a fursuit from her.
She may not be the fastest maker and she does not do deadlines as she is a perfectionist who prefers to take her time rather than to stress herself. Then paired with a decently long queue in between quote openings the wait times may be considered a little long by some but I still consider the year and a half I had to wait for my suit to be very reasonable.
Communication has been universally excellent even if sometimes she does get herself a little caught up working on one thing at a time (which is completely fine!).
Most of the criticism mentioned are fairly small nitpicks and is realistically hardly anything that would even come close to phase me from commissioning her again. She’s a wonderfully talented maker and I am thoroughly satisfied with the final product!
