HeadGives information about the head of the costume. If reviewing a set of ears, the answers would also go in this section.
I commissioned the head in 2015, a year before I commissioned the rest.
The head fits absolutely beautifully, it isn’t too tight or loose anywhere and the shape of his face means a I have a nice amount of space in front of my nose and mouth. The head is lined with what seems to be Lycra, it’s the same material my under armor is made from so it’s really good at keeping the sweat away from my face and absorbs it well. I find lined heads a little harder to clean but I’ve never had any issue cleaning Ed’s head. which is a pleasant surprise. His ventilation is excellent, the mouth is open enough to get a good air flow through. The vision is also very good, the buckram used is quite fine which gives a lovely effect on the outside, but was quite different to the wide buckram of my previous heads. This didn’t take me long to get used to, and I have never had any vision issues. He has a blind spot as is to be expected from a wide faced critter, but it honestly isn’t any worse than you’d expect from any fursuit head, and certainly causes no problems. I do have to turn my head a little to see straight ahead of me – but most heads I’ve worn are the same and it isn’t something I have an issue with at all. Had I commissioned a predatory animal I know I’d be able to see dead ahead of me, I feel like if I could in this suit he wouldn’t look correct and this is something I had already considered before commissioning.
I couldn’t possibly be any happier with how this head looks. I wasn’t sure what to expect when I commissioned it as Mercury hadn’t had a chance to do a hamster before mine, and I was blown away with the shape of the foam work that she sent me photos of. It was very clear to me that she had referenced photos of hamsters when making it, and it absolutely paid off. He is perfectly symmetrical, and while he has no complex markings she did nail where the colour of the fur splits and the choice of furs used were spot on. The shaving is totally fantastic, it’s even all around and there are the gradient is perfect. The fur when he arrived was so soft I could barely believe it, I had owned suits before this one and never felt anything like it! To this day he is still incredibly soft and fluffy. He has a small bit of airbrushing around his lip and muzzle where his whiskers sit, and it completes the look without being a lot of paint to handle. I requested whiskers for him and Mercury didn’t disappoint, years later I managed to lose one at a meet and she sent me a link to the material used, I bought some and replaced it painlessly with her permission – but she would have done it for me if I wasn’t sure. He looks very happy without looking surprised, which I love. I asked for her to use the same shaped eyes as another suit she had made and she got them spot on, creating the exact expression and eye shape I wanted. I opted for static eyes for a change and I love them, I feel they suit him more than follow me would have done. He feels well made and not flimsy, so I don’t find myself worrying about anything happening to him. She used a lovely fleece for his ears to create a nice difference in look and texture from the fur and I’ll never know quite how she managed to find the exact brown/grey shade of his ears! His nose is also pink fleece, giving a nice difference to the fur around it. Mercury used a really lovely wig for his hair, and this is something people comment on as it’s been done so well. Wigs are hard to make look good on fursuits but she absolutely made it work!
BodyGives information about the main body of the costume. If reviewing a separate set of pants/legs or torso, the answers would also go in this section.
I commissioned the body, hands and feet about a year after the head, and I received them almost a year to the day after receiving the head (purely accidental!)
When I approached Mercury about getting a body, she gave me a quote for the body, and then for body with hands, with feet, and all in. I was so pleased with the quote I went for all 3, this made Edward the first suit I had owned that was made entirely by one maker.
I asked Mercury for something hamster shaped. I was thinking thicker legs then torso, maybe going for padding much like a digitigrade suit but keeping the plantigrade shape. Mercury did some research and found some photos of a suit that she felt would be an excellent shape for Ed, and a method of making them that I had never seen before – I was very happy with the shape and we agreed to go with this. Mercury hadn’t used this method before, but if she could pull it off it meant his legs would be chubby without being heavy – and pull it off she did, flawlessly. I was given plenty of progress photos, and asked for input in many places, did I like how it was looking, was I happy with it? I was very happy, and when she had added all the fur and lined the inside, the photos she provided trying him on were highly amusing (I am quite a chunky person, Mercury is much more petite than I, it provided many giggles!). I couldn’t believe how something could be so excellent on a first attempt, and to this day he’s known more for those legs than anything else.
He is very, very light to wear – considering how heavy he looks like he should be. The fit around my arms and chest are spot on, and he is ridiculously fun to wear. Movement is not an issue despite the legs, I can lift my legs high without worrying about the suit. The stitching on him is excellent, I’ve never had any holes or anything happen, and the lining inside his legs makes it a lot easier to maintain him. His legs do get very hot, as the air inside them gets somewhat trapped however I have only found this to be an issue after a very long fursuit parade, I can combat this by simply moving my legs to circulate that air. I have also since sewn pocket to my under armor leggings and I can now put cooldown inserts in them if I know I’ll be suiting for a long time. I have no issues with heat regarding the top half of him and I do not see this as being something negative, but something to be expected with this rather unique padding style.
Physically from the outside he looks exactly as I wanted – he’s hamster shaped! He’s perfectly symmetrical though I have no markings specifically. He has longer fur on his chest area which helps hide my form a bit better, I did not request it specifically but I am so glad Mercury does that on her bodysuits! She used short white fur and normal caramel fur, which gives a beautiful mix of gradients and is exactly right. The fur is the same as his head so it’s beautifully soft and easy to manage. The zipper is up his back, hidden away in the longer fur, which I am very happy about. His tail is attached tot he suit and does an adorable little wiggle when I walk – something people have noticed!
Hands and FeetGives information about the hands and/or feet of the costume.
The hands and feet were commissioned with the body.
They are made primarily of pink fleece, with a darker pink minky fur for the pads on the hands. The claws are made of a white canvas-like material, and sewn on meaning I never have to worry about chipping them on anything. Both the hands and feet fit like a dream!
Hands – I gave Mercury a hand tracing and I don’t think I’ve ever had hand paws that fit so perfectly. They are form fitting, with 4 fingers as per my ref sheet. The use of fleece makes them breathable, and I’m at no risk of them falling off. I have good dexterity in them despite only having the 4 fingers, and I can put them on and off very comfortably. They are highly durable, I’ve not once had a popped seam or anything to worry about with them, and I can wash them in the machine very easily. The interior has some lining, I assume to assist with the shape on the inside with the paw pads, this is the same as the head and legs and makes washing easy. Mercury sent me drawings she had made of 3 paw types I could choose from, a toony style, a realistic style and a mixture of those. I chose the mixture, but I was incredibly delighted to have been offered choices!
Feet – The feet fit beautifully, and are made on foam bases with no shoes in them. The are lined in the same material as the head, and underneath they have a few layers of what feels like a solid foam and then waterproof matting – this gives what would be very soft feet some base to them, meaning I have the comfort of a almost a sock paw with the support of a shoe based paw. When doing my duct tape dummy we taped up one foot as per her instructions, and therefore my feet paws were built around an exact copy of my foot meaning they are absolutely perfect. They are easy to get on (if made harder by the thighs in the way!) and easy to get off, and incredibly durable. I was worried taht pink fleece feet would get dirty fast – but these don’t! Washing them is very easy as I can entirely submerge them.
The hands and feet are super cute. They are exactly right, 4 fingers 5 toes, and they work nicely with the body. He is clearly a rodent with them, and I couldn’t be more happy with how they look. The symmetry again is absolutely spot on, and being fleece there was no shaving needed. The colours are excellent, and the slightly darker pink for the paw pads was a brilliant choice, as they don’t stand out like a sore thumb but the are noticeably there. They match the concept art exactly, nothing about his design was changed.
OverallHow satisfied the reviewer is with the overall buying experience, including their interactions with the maker and the resulting final product.
I have been impressed with Mercury at every step of the way and I hope to have the pleasure of commissioning her for another full suit again some day. The experience, from filling in a quote form to receiving the suit was a delight, and I didn’t have to wait more than a few months each time for the items. Mercury is gaining popularity for good reason, and I hope to see her grow and gain more and more traction with years to come.
