I found STF on Twitter during their skulldog partial auction. I stuck around and waited to submit a quote and application when she opened! The application was a Google form where basic information and a few measurement (head, arms, etc.) were requested. You had to submit a quote before applying.
While STF was not my original maker of choice, I am so happy I found her work, applied, and got accepted!
Initial contact was through email, I informed STF that I was a lot easier to reach via Telegram which prompted the switch. STF was very easy to contact, and I tried to keep my communication as direct as possible due to a bit of a language barrier. Everything was very professional and I was treated very well!
STF does not allow deadlines. She tried to make an exception for me to try to get my suit done for Anthrocon of 2024, but due to some personal life matters was not able to. I do not hold this against her and I am very happy with the timeline I received my suit by.
Overall, I am very happy with my fullsuit! Despite my personal shortcomings within the commissioning process, STF did an incredible job and I feel like Jax's suit is going to last for a very long time! It was definitely worth every penny! Everything fits well and looks great! I love when people come up to me while I'm suiting and say they love Jax, its a true reflection on STF's craftsmanship. The suit is easy to clean, easy to store, and easy to wear! I only need a little help when zipping all the parts on (I'm not the best with zippers sometimes haha).
The head is built on a flexible TPU base and features cooling fans, pickable nose, a removable head and neck lining, and grumpy-shaped eyes.
This head is very breathable and comfortable, there is an adjustable strap along the back of the inside of the head, an adjustable headrest in the front, and an adjustable chin rest which help secure a comfortable fit. The pickable nose is completely hollow and I can see through the nostrils if I have the head halfway on. The mouth is slightly ajar and can be moved by my hands fairly easily for drinking water. The cooling fans are placed within the cheeks, which have mesh covering the outside (touching the fur backing). There are also hidden ear vents right before Jax's ears which help heat escape. I personally have only needed to use an external fan when the interior fans have died, they do a really good job keeping me cool. They are controlled using a button hidden in his right ear vent and is accessible while suiting, I do not need to take my head off to turn the fans on/off. I also always wear a balaclava when I am wearing the head for long periods of time.
The interior cooling fans are removable for cleaning and are powered using a USB battery pack (I had to buy this separately). The back of the neck also features a pocket for the fan controllers and has enough space to store the battery pack (an an air tag if you want). I have been meaning to find a lighter battery, since you can sometimes feel the weight on the back of my neck, but that is not a fursuit construction issue. My head is also spaced well within the fursuit head, so my skin doesn't really rub against the TPU/lining inside (except for the chin rest, which I am supposed to touch with my skin). The head itself (minus the battery pack) is very light so it travels well!
Visibility is pretty good with a minimal blind spot in the middle. Due to my suit's eye shape I get slightly less visibility than my fellow STF family members, but it is not very noticeable in comparison to my other non-STF fursuit head. Other STF heads feature magnetic eyelids and I regret not requesting magnetic eyebrows.
I have had to reglue the inside once due to my niece pulling on Jax's neck while trying him on. It was very easy to re-glue this area, it was where part of the neck connects with the headbase and was solved with two spots of hot glue. I have had no seam issues.
Overall, I am very satisfied with how Jax looks externally. He came out really well and I love all the compliments I get on his construction! There was one marking we both missed, I had checked the WIP too quickly before the fur was glued down, but other than that he matches his reference very well. I also wanted a more "mohawk" style of the furs on the top of his head, but I am happy with the style I did receive.
Shaving is great with no backing showing!
The furs are still soft and easy to brush. I personally have some challenges brushing out his mane, but that is not due to the furs chosen.
Jax features a permanent grumpy expression with follow-me eyes. Depending on how I angle him, he can look a little more silly and goofy which is great for those types of pictures. I am very happy with his expression, though if I were to commission his head again I would want magnetic eyebrows that I can move.
He also has an NFC chip in his nose that I programmed to have my socials. This is now a standard feature on STF heads.
STF asked if I could be a trial run for their new detailed maw feature. I did not pay any additional fees for this and it came out really well!
The bodysuit is front-zip with both lined and unlined areas. Padding is loose polyfill, which is accessible with medium-large openings sealed with a zipper on each leg. The tail and feetpaws attach via zippers at their respective openings. The bodysuit ends at the calf, which is where the footpaw zippers on. Zippers are covered by some overlapping fur.
The bodysuit is very comfortable to wear and fits well. I have changed slightly since I have received my suit and the bodysuit has not given me any issues whatsoever. While I do not push the limits of my bodysuit, I do feel that the seams are very durable and I have yet to pop a seam.
The lining is centered around the legs, which contain the padding, and I believe it is spacer mesh. I always wear under armor underneath my bodysuit to help keep sweat from building up in the fur backing. The bodysuit does not take that long to dry using a wetsuit dryer. There are construction marks within the bodysuit, however they are not very distracting and do not bleed through.
It is pretty breathable, I can feel wind blow though my bodysuit pretty well when I am standing outside.
Overall, the bodysuit is great. The shaving is amazing, the zipper hides well within the longer fur along the belly and chest, and is consistent with no bald spots.
The fur is soft and very easy to brush.
I selected a color for his markings that I personally not as fond of, but that is not really the fault of STF. I approved of two markings on the legs that are a little too far forward, but again that is not an STF issue.
My body type does not translate Jax's masculine body shape as well as I had hoped, but he has very thick thighs which are very plush and soft. The bodysuit is also not too heavy, it looks like it is heavier than it is.
The bodysuit shape in combination with the feetpaws is amazing as well. Really great work!!
Jax's handpaws feature five stuffed fingers, hidden finger escapes, half-lining, and large plush claws.
I have small hands, so even though I gave hand measurements the handpaws are still a little large in the fingers. This does not really bother me, I had a feeling this was going to happen and is not the fault of STF. In pictures and in person this is not noticeable. I wish they were a little longer along the wrist but it is not really an issue, my under armor does not show if I outstretch my arms. I have better dexterity than some people due to having a five-finger paw setup, and finger escapes make it very easy to manipulate small objects and use my phone without needing to take my paws off. Each paw is also labeled with a left and right tag.
I have yet to have an issue with my handpaws. They are sewn very well and handle when I adjust them to fit my hands better (I do this by pushing down un between each finger with my other hand).
The paws are half-lined with the lining on the bottom. I believe the lining is spandex with a custom printing but I am not 100% sure. The finger escapes are little slits underneath the base of each finger, cut through the fur backing and the lining, and are relatively seamless. The paws dry relatively quickly, I do not use gloves underneath my paws currently, though I am looking to change this for my own comfort. Cleaning is very easy.
Overall, the paws are great! Consistent shaving, even in-between the two halves of his paw pads. One or two of the claws are sort of going in a weird direction, but this is not noticeable most of the time. The claws on Jax's paws are larger than average, so that could be why there is the one slight issue. The claws themselves feel very secure within the fingers. The handpaws also feature cuffs!
The tail is a polyfill stuffed medium sized tail and features three different colored stuffed spikes along the top and a hidden zipper on the bottom. The tail is very comfortable to wear, with a minky covered EVA foam base and two nylon belt loops. The belt loops are evenly placed and provide a good amount of support. The hidden zipper is how I am able to remove the stuffing for a much easier cleaning experience. The tail has a zipper rather than a cuff, and it zips onto the bodysuit. I have yet to receive any issues with the tail. It wags well, wears well, and looks great!
Overall, the tail is amazing! There is no shaving and the fur is still very soft and easy to brush. Cleaning is very easy. The tail wags as expected and is very satisfying!
I am planning on ordering a longer floor dragger tail, Jax has a much longer tail than what I received, however I really like having the option of a shorter tail for him!
The feetpaws are made from flexible TPU, are lined with the same material as the bodysuit (spacer mesh I believe) and feature plush claws and an additional dewclaw. They are outdoor feetpaws with standard EVA foam on the bottom. The feetpaws have crocs on the inside which helps makes the feet extremely light. These feet extend up to my calf and attach to the bodysuit via a zipper, so my feetpaws do not have the standard problems some others may have. Each foot has a left and right tag. They do not typically get overly sweaty, and are not as cumbersome to walk in due to their light weight. The feet themselves are wide, so I have had to adjust my walking accordingly when in suit. They are not too difficult to clean.
The major issue I have had is that both crocs have detached from the bottoms of the inside of the feetpaws. This does not visually do anything, it just makes for a weird feeling walking sometimes. The crocs attach to the bottom with hot glue, so they are not that hard to fix. I am looking into alternatives to hot glue to try to prevent this issue from continuing to occur.
Overall, the feetpaws are great! Despite the crocs issue, I love them a lot. Shaving on the toes is great with no bald spots, and the fur is very soft and easy to brush. The dewclaw features its own little paw pad as well (its difficult to see but I really appreciate it!). While the plush claws are susceptible to getting dirty due to their light color, they are not that difficult to clean.
One or two of the plush claws are not as centered on the toes but that is not a real issue.
The interior fans and detailed maw are the only parts that are not typically seen on all suits (even within the STF family).
The fans are great! Once I figured out how to use them correctly they've been a really cool and important part of my suit!
As the first detailed maw, I was not sure what to expect, but the detail is amazing!! It was worth the experiment!
