Very easy to get a quote, I commented on her instagram commission post and she DMed me soon after to discuss
After payment was settled, I was very confused that she demanded I pick all my own fur colors from Howl/fursuitsupplies. Your average commissioner wouldn’t own fur samples and I certainly don’t. She did still order fur samples based on my answers, but I expressed uncertainty for one of the fur colors and she ended up not ordering a sample for it at all. When I pointed this out she said it was because I hadn't specified a color for that one.
Communication was good at the start, but pretty quickly deteriorated after she finished carving the headbase. My messages would not be responded to for days, and I was given almost no updates until things appeared to be finished. Most pressingly, I received no work in progress photos between when the foam headbase was completed and when the face was entirely furred and just appeared to need to be glued. When I asked her to change a fur color that she hadn't gotten approved she ghosted me for over a week before coming back to claim that I had approved it and it was too late to change it (she also claimed that it was my right as a commissioner to ask for changes at the same time as she was telling me she wouldn't change it…). When I told her I had never approved the color she relinquished only slightly saying she would finish the entire suit and only then would change it if I still didn't like it. Because of how frustrating communication had gotten by the end I just gave in and decided it at least looked good enough from the front.
I was promised a few different ETAs that were not met. Not really an issue, the first time especially since it was due to the fur getting sent to the wrong address, but the communication on this could have been a lot better. Right before she ended up ghosting me for a week she said it would be shipped by the end of December and completely missed that.
But disregarding that I think the 4 month turn around is still fast and I am satisfied with it.
I'm very mixed on the overall product. It's objectively a very nice suit but it's hard for me to overlook issues I had with it, that I couldn't get fixed due to lack of communication from the maker. I think what tips me over the edge into negative is that I could not wear the head for more than a few minutes without having to do modifications to it first, despite having informed the maker of my head measurements before receiving a quote. It also arrived with a faint but distinct smell of weed (particularly in the lining) which is frankly unacceptable without any sort of warning.
Maker was informed when I asked for a quote that I would need a large head to fit a relatively large head circumference + my glasses, and said she could accommodate. However, when it first arrived the head was an extremely tight fit on me, to the point it was painful to wear for more than a couple minutes. It also sat very heavy on my nose. I cut a large chunk of foam out of the back and added some padding to the top of the head to mitigate this and now it fits lovely. It still sits a lot of its weight on my nose unfortunately but it's much more bearable.
Came lined with cotton fabric. I can't review this part since I ended up replacing it almost immediately after I had to cut foam out of the base. Notably I found a pin and 2 fabric clips that had been left in when replacing the lining. The fabric clips I find amusing more than anything and frankly the pin probably would not have been an issue if I hadn't been digging in the lining.
The original lining also had a pocket for storing the eyelids and extra tongue
Ventilation and vision are fine. I have pretty extreme tunnel vision but that's expected for a fursuit head with 2D eyes imo.
Extremely mixed on the visuals of the suit. I went with this maker because I loved her very cartoony style and she absolutely delivered on that front. If this wasn't a custom suit and was instead a premade I think I wouldn't have any issues at all.
For the pros first:
As stated the cartoon style is exactly what I wanted and looks great.
The shaving on the fur is clean, no bald spots that I can see.
It has a goofy smile that fits the character really well.
I LOOOVE the way the ear tufts look
Used all Howl furs, so it's really soft especially in spots where it's not shaved
Overall just a really professional looking suit
As for the cons:
Fangs are very obviously asymmetric – the right one tends to pop out of the mouth while the left one gets stuck in the mouth
Minky in the ears is wrinkled, especially near the top of the ears
Changes I requested are pretty obvious up close where she had to add in more fur. Not obvious from a normal viewing distance at least
The heart shaped ear flashes are hard to see due to lack of contrast. This is the color I mentioned not approving in the communications section
Neck tends to wrinkle weirdly while I'm wearing it
They're big ole puffy paws. I don't get too much dexterity with them but they're paws so that's normal. I can still gesticulate pretty well in them which is nice for photos. They've held up well so far and are comfy to wear. A little tight but not uncomfortably so. Lined with cotton fabric and cuffed with minky.
Also they have squeakers :3
I love how she did the spots on the beans, I forgot to clarify that they should be asymmetric before she did the applique but she happened to do them like that anyway to my great pleasure. The claws are all lined up the correct way.
Despite the reference given, she did the belt attachment as one large block of fabric instead of two straps. Admittedly I don't mind this that much but it's frustrating I was not told she would change the attachment until she had already finished it.
Otherwise, it's a nub tail. They're pretty hard to mess up and mine was not messed up.
fun shaped, stays up well on my belt, and wags nice. What else is there to say?
Would you recommend this maker?
This means the reviewer would NOT recommend Toki Fur unless they significantly change their practices.
Based off of my own experience I can't recommend her as a maker
