Relationship With Maker
The maker is NOT a friend

Prior Experience
I’ve made two of my own heads previous this, but this is my first professionally made suit.

Informed Maker of Issues
In the initial design, the tip of the tail was white. I had concerns keeping it clean as a first time suit owner, and the solution suggested was to slightly alter the design, which worked perfectly for me. Once I got the suit, I didn’t have any other issues. More recently I’ve been wishing for some type of volume in the feathers on the head and tail so that they don’t lie flat, and have discussed ways I might be able to alter them with the maker. For now I’m leaving them as they are.

Item Being Reviewed
Cardinal- partial fursuit, designed by suit maker, made for my measurements

Character Concept Art

This is not the original concept by the maker, but it’s the reference I made directly from their design. I can’t seem to fish up the original.

Head

Wear Satisfaction

Overall, I’ve been super happy with the head! It fits me pretty well, I definitely wouldn’t suggest a larger head try to wear him. I’m amazed at the visibility! It has the normal blind spot directly in front, but it makes up for that with the peripheral vision. It’s a quick adjustment to get used to seeing out of him!

The head is made to my measurement and no more- my eyelashes brush the screen eyes sometimes. (I do have long eyelashes).

The airflow is perfect- all of my hot breath goes out the muzzle and it’s easy to blow hot air out and get some cooler air in. It’s also the perfect size muzzle to shove a water bottle up, so I don’t have to remove the head to hydrate all the time. (Plus as a dinosaur, it’s fun to shove my handler’s arm up there and pretend I’m eating it).

Visual Satisfaction

I haven’t noticed any problems with symmetry and the shaving is all very nice. The transition from long to short is a pretty sudden change, but I think it works well and it’s never bothered me. The fur is all very soft, and the only place I sometimes have trouble brushing is at the bottom of the neck- I think it’s how it’s sewn to the lining but it wasn’t too hard to figure out how to brush it effectively.

I told the maker to go with whatever expression they wanted since they designed the character, and I love how it turned out! The follow me eyes have worked in every photo I’ve gotten so far. If I leave the head out, my roommate finds it unsettling.

I didn’t notice this until I had had the suit for a while already, and since I can’t find the original concept, I don’t know for sure- in my reference, the stripe down the back of Cardinal’s neck is black. On the suit head, it’s just the red stripe. I honestly don’t know whether I did my own reference sheet wrong or if this was an error in the suit, but either way this was the maker’s design in the first place and I love the suit as I have it.

Hands and Feet

Wear Satisfaction

I have had no major issues with the hands or feet. All the seams have held up well and even with outdoor use, the white fur isn’t too difficult to manage.

The hands are very comfortable, they’re unlined but the fingers have pockets of fluff to make the puffy digits. The fingers are big enough that you can put 2 fingers in any of them, there isn’t a “right” way like with some 4-finger paws. I’m able to tell the left and right hands apart decently well even while wearing the head.

The feet are a durable foam bottom and built on top of a shoe. I told the maker my shoe size and they picked shoes, and the feet paws do slip a little bit. I’m normally a men’s 8, but depending on brand sometimes smaller. I told the maker simply a men’s 8. Thess shoes must be one of those few that I’d be smaller, because they’re definitely loose on my feet. HOWEVER, since the feet paws are so large in form and the claws so big, I tend to have to walk very consciously. When I walk “in character” the loose shoes don’t bother me one bit. It only shows up when I’m walking fast, usually when a handler is leading me too quickly somewhere. It’s minor and I can usually avoid it with thick socks.

Visual Satisfaction

The aesthetics of the hands and feet are great! The hands are shaved evenly all over, and the feet are shaved in a way that helps them not get as much dirt stuck in them. Both have large stuffed vinyl claws which are convenient because if they get in the way, they’re just stuffed, they don’t hurt anything or break. I think it’s a perfect material for large claws like this.

Tails

Wear Satisfaction

The tail was honestly a bit shorter than I expected. We didn’t specify a length beyond that it would touch the ground- and it does touch the ground but I’m a short guy. It’s not wildly off of what I expected, only a matter of a few inches or so. Since we didn’t have a specific measurement agreed upon, that’s not bad at all.

I do have a lot of difficulty getting my belt situated with the tail and often need help. It has two loops on the tail itself, which means I have to put the belt halfway on, put it through one tail loop, then put it through a pants loop, and then back through the other tail loop before continuing with my pants. It does keep the tail secure and centered. The loops are very securely on the tail- when my belt gets stuck in them (thus warranting so much help), I’ve actually popped seams on my own pants but not on the tail.

Visual Satisfaction

Everything looks great on the tail! I did notice just the other day that I think there’s two different types of black fur on it. The markings are a shiny black that’s a bit rougher, and the tip is a softer black that’s less shiny. It’s SUPER hard to notice and only saw it because I live with this suit. I think the softer stuff is easier to brush stuff out of which is ideal for the tip anyways.

Great

Project Completion Time
I had no deadline and this suit was actually being put in between larger commissions as it was essentially a pre-made, so the timing was all perfect. I knew it would be done between two specific projects, and it was.

Final Comments
This maker is very easy to talk with and I got my suit for a very good price since they were a new maker. I’m not sure what cons there really are, beyond just that they were a new maker and didn’t have a TON of examples of work. There might have been some communication hiccups but that’s to be expected for a new maker and they’ve gotten much more under their belt now. I’ve kept in touch with them online and they’re very good at providing WIPs but sometimes doesn’t get time estimates for projects right. Their portfolio has grown a lot since I commissioned, and I’m hoping after seeing their recent suits to one say get a bodysuit for Cardinal from them as well.
